How To Avoid Slips and Falls in icy Conditions in Calgary

Ryan Olsen, August 20, 2024August 27, 2024

Slips and falls during icy conditions are a common hazard, often leading to serious injuries. However, by taking proactive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Whether you’re heading out for work, running errands, or simply enjoying the winter scenery, it’s crucial to be prepared and cautious. Follow these guidelines to stay safe and minimize the risk of injury when venturing out in icy weather.

Strategies to Prevent Slips and Falls

  • Avoid Rushing: Don’t hurry or take shortcuts through areas where snow or ice removal is incomplete.
  • Use Handrails: Whenever possible, use handrails for added support.
  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: Opt for flat shoes with rubber soles for better traction on ice and snow, avoiding leather-soled or high-heeled shoes.
  • Take Small Steps: Keep your center of balance under you by taking small, careful steps.
  • Plan Your Route: Choose the safest path to your destination and allow extra time to get there.1
  • Limit Heavy Loads: Avoid carrying heavy shopping bags, especially on steps.
  • Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings; some areas stay icy longer, especially those not exposed to sunlight.
  • Walk Slowly: Never run on icy ground; walk slowly and carefully.
  • Concentrate: Focus on where you are stepping and maintain your balance to reduce the risk of slipping on ice. Avoid distractions like texting or scrolling through social media.2
  • Use Floor Mats: Place floor mats at entrances to remove moisture from your shoes, reducing the risk of slipping indoors.
  • Keep Hands Free: Keep your hands out of your pockets to maintain balance.
  • Take Small Steps: Move with small, side-to-side steps to help maintain your center of gravity. Think of waddling like a penguin to stay balanced on icy surfaces.3
  • Be Cautious with Vehicles: Exercise extra caution when getting in and out of vehicles, using the vehicle for support.
  • Clear Paths: Keep walkways clear of debris, water, ice, and snow.

Helping the Elderly

The elderly are particularly vulnerable during cold weather. Assist elderly parents, relatives, or neighbors by running errands for them or adding sand or gravel to their garden paths and sidewalks.
